- @Héron du fleuve: I'm sorry, but if you do not understand fr:Aide:Insérer une image and the pages it links to, it is unlikely that someone can word it a different way that will make it clearer, especially here on a mainly English-language help desk. You might try Commons:Bistro or fr:Wikipédia:Forum des nouveaux or fr:Wikipédia:Le Bistro. - Jmabel ! talk 23:44, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
- Merci beaucoup. 2605:8D80:582:2E8F:6C4C:F871:E123:4D9A 15:11, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
- Well, one information that was not specified in her question above is that the user is visually impaired and interacts with websites through specialized voice software. Help pages on the topic of image use have a lot of details and rely in part on boxes, formats, visual clues. We do not seem to have something that explains the very basics in easy text. That is probably inevitable. This could be a particular type of situation where wording it a different way could actually be of much help. Or maybe we should just tell the user that it's an impossible task.
- Another issue is this. The user wishes to contribute to Commons, if that is possible. She manages to take pictures with her phone and to upload them to Commons. Which is already good and I suppose it requires effort and tenacity given her condition. She received messages telling her to add categories and better descriptions. The problem is that when photos are on Commons, including her own photos, she cannot see them well enough and Commons has no feature like the "alt" feature that can give a textual description. I suppose that one obvious thing can be to suggest to her that in the future she writes precise descriptions immediately when she uploads. However, that doesn't help with other images on Commons. Can textual descriptions be read by text-reading software wherever the thext is located in description pages, e.g. inside the information template and a language template? @Jmabel: I know that you are much more familiar than me with accessibility questions. Is there advice you can share? What options, if any, or practical ways, are available to visually impaired users to interact more easily with Commons? -- Asclepias (talk) 23:21, 15 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Asclepias: is there some way I should have known when answering that this was a visually impaired person trying to work with images?
- User:DrMel supposedly had a whole team of people through https://www.bemyeyes.com/ wanting to work on this sort of thing, but I don't think anything ever actually happened. It is possible that contacting bemyeyes directly might help, but I have no idea how much support is available in French. - Jmabel ! talk 23:57, 15 April 2024 (UTC)
Nathan Wheeler mansion / Waldemere[edit]
This was posted in the "How to download" discussion. It's obviously not relevant to that, but might be something someone wants to follow up. - Jmabel ! talk 23:16, 12 April 2024 (UTC)
There’s a stereo view card that say Nathan Wheeler mansion. It’s actually Waldemere, PT Barnum’s 3rd. Home in Bridgeport, Connecticut at Seaside Park. 67.83.67.129 17:28, 12 April 2024 (UTC)
- I found File:Residence of Hon. Nathaniel Wheeler, by Pomeroy & Wilson.png, which is really in Bridgeport, but I am not sure if the suggested address is correct. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 00:25, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
Picture of methylammonium formate[edit]
I recently wrote an article on methylammonium formate. Today, I found an image online that used the exact same specific type of ball-and-stick notation as the rest of Wikipedia generally uses (by the way that notation is awesome and I want to know where to use it). I downloaded the file, and then tried to upload it, but it said I had to agree that I own the copyright to that image, which I do not. It also said that I can only publish my own works. My only other option other than to upload a file from my computer was to search it on Wikimedia, and there was only one image that popped up that had nothing to do with methylammonium formate. Tickbeat (talk) 15:03, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Tickbeat: Hi, and welcome. Where did you find that image online? See also COM:NETC. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:10, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- So I looked back, and:
- 1. The image turned out to be from Wikidocs.
- 2. It was a picture of methylamine, not methylammonium formate. In fact, I can find precisely zero images of specifically methylammonium formate. If I can figure out what software produces images of molecules that bare the specific type of ball-and-stick notation that Wikipedia frequently uses in their images, (if you know, you know), then I can just make my own image, in which case it will actually have been made by me, and then I won't have that problem. But I don't know how to do that, or whether or not I need to. Tickbeat (talk) 15:13, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Tickbeat: Commons talk:WikiProject Chemistry seems a good place to ask for suggestions. (Or you might contact users who create chemistry illustrations, for example Benjah-bmm27.) -- Asclepias (talk) 16:05, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- How do I contact a user? Tickbeat (talk) 16:58, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- On the talk page of the user. For example, if other users want to talk to you, they can go to your talk page: User talk:Tickbeat. It's the same thing to talk to another user, but with the username of that user instead of yours. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:57, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- How do I contact a user? Tickbeat (talk) 16:58, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- There are a few different "standard" types of ball&stick. If you can identify a specific example/style you like, I can tell you some software that can do it. We do have images you could cut'n'paste together (as long as you cite:), such as File:Methylammonium-3D-balls.png and File:Sodium-formate-3D-balls.png. But a word of caution: these types of diagrams of salts can be misleading, so there is a risk that making something "not really correct, but graphically high quality" could reinforce the wrongness to others. DMacks (talk) 18:14, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- The pictures of methylammonium and sodium-formate actually capture perfectly the style I was referring to. The only thing about them is that the hydrogen atoms and carbon atoms are the same size, which I have seen differently in other ball&stick notations, such that hydrogen atoms are smaller than carbon atoms. Airing on the side of scientific accuracy, every element of the notation in the two images you linked me two are perfect, except for the sizes of the atoms. The sizes of the atoms should be proportional to their atomic mass by some arbitrary decided factor. Tickbeat (talk) 20:21, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
Copyright for photos found on news website[edit]
Can I upload photos on WikiMedia found on news websites?
What will be the copyright category?
Will mentioning the name of the news website as author/photographer sufficient? Kawrno Baba (talk) 06:04, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Kawrno Baba: Short answer: no.
- Longer answer: while it is possible that there are files on a news website that are eligible for Commons, they are few and far between. Commons accepts only files that are either in the public domain or free-licensed. It is unusual for a news website to host any significant number of photos that fall in either category, though of course there are exceptions: e.g. a news site might use a U.S. government photo that is in the public domain (unlike most governments, the U.S. federal government places all creative work its employees do as part of their jobs immediately in the public domain), or they might make use of a third-party photo that has been free-licensed (though probably half of such turn out already to be on Commons). Generally, unless you really know what you are doing, news websites are a poor place to look for freely reusable photos. - Jmabel ! talk 06:14, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. These two articles are too long for my query. Can you please summarise according to my query?
- I want to upload a photo of a person. How do I know if the photo 'can be used by anybody'?
- Especially, in my country copyright issues are rarely acknowledged, so there is no clear copyright declaration about contents. There is no declaration of copyright status in my country as WikiMedia classifies distinctly. Things are either stated 'copyright protected', or not. The photos that do not say 'copyright protected' are free to use with proper declaration of source, especially for news websites. Kawrno Baba (talk) 06:49, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- The answer to a question does not change, if you ask again: No. You write about "your country", but you do not say, which country that would be. It doesn't matter. How many countrys are ignoring copyright, Commons abides to copyright. To upload an image you need a proof, that is is pd or free. If as you say, websites in your country do not tell if an image is pd or free (only that it is not free, or do not tell at all) you do not have a proof. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 11:40, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Kawrno Baba: without knowing what country you are from it's hard to argue this, but I am not aware of any country in the world where the legal situation is what you describe. It is (quite) possible that you live in a country where these laws are rarely enforced. In that case, I guess you could have a personal website unrelated to Commons that is hosted in your country and ignores the laws.
- The attitude that you can't be bothered to educate yourself on the topic and want people to give you definitive answers to vague questions simply won't cut it here. We are all volunteers. If you have a specific question about a specific third-party photo on a specific site, someone here probably can answer it for you without you bothering to educate yourself. However, other than that, if you aren't willing to develop at least a moderate understanding of copyright and free-licensing, please only upload pictures you took yourself that are not pictures of other people's copyrighted or potentially copyrightable work. - Jmabel ! talk 15:21, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- The other person answered perfectly. It was sufficient.
- I am more of a case basis person. The given two articles are screaming TLDR. I don't see why it's wrong to learn from an experienced person rather than reading the original source.
- And my country is Bangladesh. Copyright laws are rarely enforced here. (I am not proud of it.)
- And thanks to both of you, I got what I came for. Kawrno Baba (talk) 15:45, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Kawrno Baba: Since those laws are on the books and Bangladesh is a member of the Berne Convention, Univ. Copyright Convention, and World Trade Organization, we have to follow them. See COM:Bangladesh. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:36, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
Can I upload images featued in the https://leonardo.ai "platform gallery" section?[edit]
I am not sure if this counts as permission to use these images Bombombom123 (talk) 07:50, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not sure about that specific site, but your probably better off not uploading AI generated images to begin with. Otherwise it's more then likely they will just be deleted as out of scope. Looking through the gallery that seems to be case with most, if not all, of the images anyway. --Adamant1 (talk) 08:00, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
PD-flag[edit]
AbchyZa22 (talk) 11:47, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, Hm, the template sort of indirectly links to Commons:Umbral de originalidad#Logotipos y banderas, but there's nothing there specifically about banderas, so maybe it is supposed to mean that one applies similar criteria as for logotipos. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:18, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
A copyright rule I am not sure I understood correctly[edit]
Per Category:Stamps of Greece, "Modern stamps of this country are not in public domain or their status is unknown. They are protected by international copyright laws at least until 70 years after author's death. [...] Please do not upload photographs or scans of stamps of this country". Does that mean that I am not allowed to upload photos of my post-1970 stamps, even though both the stamps and the photos are mine? Deiadameian (talk) 19:02, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Deiadameian: Correct, physically owning an object doesn't give you the copyright to it. The copyright would belong to the designers and engravers, and since post-1970 is after 1953, those stamps are in still copyright. Abzeronow (talk) 19:04, 14 April 2024 (UTC)

File upload blocked by filter[edit]
I am attempting to upload a mp3 file which is freely licensed (owned by the U.S. government and explicitly gives permission for unrestricted use and access, courtesy of the Reagan Presidential Library), however it is being blocked by an automated filter. What would be the best way to proceed with the upload? The file in question can be found here: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/276558209, it has important historical significance as the first time a member of the Reagan administration acknowledged the existence of AIDS. Alternative versions of file[edit]
Hi, I'm looking to upload a new spiral version of the geologic time scale for use on Wiki. I have three versions (one based on the ICS colouring, and two alternative colours schemes that are colour-blind friendly). Each version has a light & dark variant where the text colour is inverted for areas over transparent zones. There are six SVG files in total. Aside from giving them a consistent naming scheme and uploading each as a separate file, is there the possibility of uploading an alternate version based on the light/dark variants? Jarred C Lloyd (talk) 02:14, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not sure I understand your question. Yes, all six are presumably welcome, but I can't make any real sense of "is there the possibility of uploading an alternate version based on the light/dark variants?"
- You can link file pages to one another with {{Other version}}, if that is what you are asking. - Jmabel ! talk 03:45, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, yes other other version is what I am after. My desire is to have all six variants uploaded but linked to each other. Jarred C Lloyd (talk) 04:07, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
file information contradicts itself[edit]
A Barbary Pirate by Giovanni Guida.jpg: The style does indicate that the 19th century dates are right. However if in fact the author was born in 1992, that is a problem. Please advise? File is currently in use on en-wiki at en:Regency of Algiers, so I guess I will remove it pending confirmation of an error. I would however like to use the image if it is legal so please do let me know, thanks Elinruby (talk) 05:40, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Elinruby: Good eye! I've fixed the problem by removing the reference to the modern artist also named Giovanni Guida from File:A Barbary Pirate by Giovanni Guida.jpg and then edited the wikidata item for the painting (d:Q123822220) to change the creator to Giovanni Guida (1837–1895) instead of Giovanni Guida (1992-). —RP88 (talk) 06:15, 16 April 2024 (UTC
Thank you ;) It looked to me like that was the case but I wanted to be sure about that. Elinruby (talk) 06:25, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, the source link specified on the file page for the painting does identify the artist as the Giovanni Guida who was born in 1837, not the one born in 1992. The style also matches the other painting we have from him at Category:Giovanni Guida (1837-1895). —RP88 (talk) 06:31, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

Government Logo[edit]
I want to upload a logo of a government agency. The agency is Greater Miami Expressway Agency (The successor to Miami-Dade Expressway Authority). Im currently working on updating the MDX wikipedia to GMX. Am i clear to upload the logo? Xp4eternity (talk) 22:19, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Xp4eternity: Is Greater Miami Expressway Agency part of the Florida Department of Transportation? If so, it would be copyrighted. Some of Florida's governmental works are public domain but not all (Florida's DOT is allowed to claim copyright). Abzeronow (talk) 01:10, 19 April 2024 (UTC)

Airliners.net[edit]
Unless I am mistaken, photographer Eduard Marmet has released ALL his aircraft images on airliners.net for use here on Wikimedia. Currently Wikimedia has 824 of his images uploaded, but there are over 3,200 on airliners.net, and I am particularly interested in one of those that are not yet uploaded. I have tried to find a way to bring it on board, but have failed. Please help.
The image I want is https://www.airliners.net/photo/Freedom-Airlines/Convair-580/192675
Images from Eduard at airliners.net already uploaded include; https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Luftwaffe_Hansa_Jet_at_Basle_-_May_1984.jpg
I have found this template from 2011, but do not know how to proceed from here. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:EduardMarmet

- @Aafi: Does the VRT ticket cover all of Marmet's photographs from airliners? Abzeronow (talk) 02:00, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Abzeronow: Sorry for replying late. I am in Germany and it is pretty much difficult for me to have my laptop charged (since I missed bringing an Indian connector), and thus having very little access to it. I had a look at the ticket and I feel I can reproduce the text here. Someone wrote to Eduard that I am specifically seeking your permission to use this image:
- http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0487023/M/ and the permissions follow: The online encycoppeida Wikipedia is a great thing which should always be supported. Of course I give you the permission to include the photo into your article under the terms and conditions stated in your request below. I own the copyright to the image mentioned in your email letter and found at: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0487023/M/ I grant permission to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later
- I do not see any basis for {{EduardMarmet}} in the ticket, and since its creator is blocked across Wikimedia sites, it should be investigated.─ Aafī (talk) 19:04, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

On removal of DI without explanation[edit]
Hi. I have recently tagged an image (File:草尾毅.jpg) for CSD F5 - missing permission. A source is listed, but I cannot find any evidence that the photograph is licensed under CC-BY 2.0. An IP user keeps removing the notice, but not giving evidence that the image is licensed. I cannot find any CC-BY (or any free license) notice on the source, or any other possible source. I have added the notice back, after which it was removed again. I don't want to edit war, but there is still no evidence of permission. What should I do? Thanks, WhoAteMyButter (talk) 04:32, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- In the source a different image is shown anyway. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 06:14, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- I seemed to have missed that entirely - apologies! Although even then, that's {{Di-no source}}; still DI. I suspect that if I were to tag it as such, it would be reverted by the same IP. Where would I go to get this resolved and/or ensure that the source & copyright status is clarified? WhoAteMyButter (talk) 06:19, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- @WhoAteMyButter: If someone objects to speedy deletion, the right solution is usually to open a full deletion request. See Commons:Deletion requests. For a single file, using the "Nominate for deletion" in the tools is the easiest way to do this. --bjh21 (talk) 09:53, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

- @WhoAteMyButter: You can tag it for speedy deletion with a link to one of the non-free previous internet publications, e.g. IMDb. If the user still removes the tag without opening a regular DR, you can ask for help at COM:AN/U. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:57, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

Images relating to state legislation, Australia[edit]
I would like to find out about uploading images (for a wikipedia article) relating to state legislation (on a particular topic) in Australia. The images are either individual pages of documents available but obscure, from the internet, or images of pages/maps not available on the internet, such as from the state archives. Reasons I'd like to be able to use them are that they would provide information that is (1) very difficult to find or cross-reference or (2) not available to the public if I were only to reference it. - Thanks anyway. J5hbx (talk) 22:37, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- J5hbx, that's likely because Jim.henderson deactivated the option to receive email from brand-new users ("Allow emails from brand-new users") on their preferences. Yeah, contacting them on their talkpage will probably solve. Regards, RodRabelo7 (talk) 22:44, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry; it's all my fault. I have my E-mail option set for my spam magnet account. Not a good idea, since undesired messages via Wikimedia are uncommon for me. I'll repair that.

Are images in the russian wikipedia CC?[edit]
I am doing a project involving some soviet historical actors, for wich portraits are available in the russian wikipedia but don't seem to appear in Wikimedia CC itself or any other wikipedia language.
I was wondering if these images should still be safe to use (in a non-commercial manner and giving credit) or if the russian wikipedia project has different standars that could explain the difference. Thank you very much for any perspective. Xandru4 (talk) 06:10, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Xandru4: Content hosted by Commons needs to comply with Commons:Licensing under US copyright law and under the copyright laws of the country of first publication (which could be Russia in this case). In addition, some local Wikipedia host fair use or non-free content that is not allowed by Commons, and Commons doesn't accept any licenses that place any type of restriction on commercial or derivative use. It will be much easier for someone to give you a less general answer if you can provide a link the files you're asking about. If they're uploaded locally to Russian Wikipedia, you can link to them from this discussion by simply adding the language^prefix ":ru:" before each file's name (for example,
[[:ru:File:Filename.Fileextension]]
) and then adding them to this discussion. If you can't get that to work just provide a link to the URL addresses for the files' pages. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:47, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Xandru4: Bonjour,
Cette politique se trouve sur la page ru:Википедия:Критерии добросовестного использования.
- -- Asclepias (talk) 13:49, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
Xandru4 (talk) 20:34, 22 April 2024 (UTC)

- @Asclepias, i guess you didn't see another image Karte used jeolla.png.--KEmel49 (talk) 04:44, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

Using the "Articles near me"[edit]
I need help to understand how commons treats this Articles near me feature that the Wikimedia Map have on several pages, including this category page for city Wikimedia commons - Tromsø
- Opening the page
- button to enlarge map.
- Find the area to search within, for "Articles in this area"
- Click the button, and…nothing happens!?
I have checked on beforehand, that there would be thing, buildings, landmarks and streets in the citycentre depicted through pictures, articles etc. These do not show up on street map as expected. WHY
thank you for reading this request - Mathias -Ahoy (talk) 09:41, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- Not sure what you mean. We are on commons here, not on Wikimedia map. Is the articles near me a gadget? Paradise Chronicle (talk) 09:17, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Paradise Chronicle: The editor Mathias -Ahoy is referring to the "Show nearby articles" feature of the enlarged version of maps provided by mw:Help:Extension:Kartographer, accessible from Commons categories which have locations in their {{Wikidata Infobox}}. The problem seen by this editor comes from the meaning of "articles" (i.e. the default namespace, which on Commons are called "Galleries"). In this case the feature is working correctly because while Commons has many files and categories near to Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum in Tromsø, Commons doesn't have any Galleries with locations close to Tromsø (Commons does have a Gallery for Tromsø at Tromsø, but it doesn't have a location). Mathias -Ahoy, as an example that shows what I am describing, try zooming the map on the category Category:Eiffel Tower and then clicking "Show nearby articles". You will see nearby Commons galleries, including Tour Eiffel, Les Invalides, and Hôtel du ministre des Affaires étrangères. Note that these are not categories or files, they are in the default namespace, which on the Wikipedias are "Articles" but on Commons are "Galleries". —RP88 (talk) 09:50, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

Charlie Kirk Photo[edit]
A user has marked the deletion request on my picture of File:Charlie Kirk April 2024.jpg under (CSD F10) which states: "Low-to-medium quality selfies and other personal images of or by users who have no constructive global contributions." But the thing is that it is a picture of Charlie Kirk that I took of him, not a picture of myself. I also don't understand how I do not have global contributions. You can check my global contribution across multiple wikis. Shoot for the Stars (talk) 22:24, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

Trying to upload picture of MY OWN collection personally signed bills by Mary Ellen Withrow[edit]
Hello I took pictures of my own collection collector signed bills by treasure Mary Ellen Withrow. I own the bills and I took the pictures myself and keep getting copyright errors. These are ultra low number serial bills with the same numbers, already high value but also courtesy signed by Mary Ellen Withrow. Her signature is public domain. They are in a treasury holder with her favorite quote Yesterday is a canceled check. Tomorrow is a promissory note, but today is cash. I think it adds intrinsic value to her wiki. But have tried many times to add it. MoonwHale1 (talk) 00:16, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi MoonwHale1. It's not clear whether you're having problems uploading files to Commons or whether you having problems adding files to some Wikipedia article. If you're having problems uploading files to Commons, then perhaps you can provide some more information for reference. Have you already posted this pictures somewhere else online? Generally, when you take a picture of something created by something else, the copyright status of whatever your photographing also needs to be considered in addition to the copyright of the picture you yourself has taken. If by "bills" you mean currency, then you might want to take a look at COM:Currency because copyright laws can differ from country to country when it comes to currency. Owning the bills yourself doesn't necessarily mean they're no longer under copyright protection, and Commons can only host images of the bills if they no longer or never have been under copyright protection, or they've been released by their copyright holder under an acceptable free license. If, however, you mean something else by "bills", then please clarify. Now, if you're having problems adding files to a Wikipedia article, you're going to need to discuss that on the article's corresponding talk page because that's not really something related to Commmons per se. Commons is mainly concerned with the licensing of the content it hosts, but the inclusion of such content in articles (i.e. the encyclopedic relevance of the content to the article's subject) is left up to each Wikipedia to decide. Even if the content is fine from a copyright standpoint, you might still need to establish a consensus for its inclusion in the article from an ecyclopedic standpoint. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:50, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
- Also, it would help a lot to say exactly what upload tool (URL or name of app) you are using, and exactly what error message you are getting. - Jmabel ! talk 05:54, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
- @MoonwHale1: you triggered an automated warning by trying to upload small resolution files as a new user. This filter is not capable of any complicated decisions.
