It’s now incredibly common to see electric bikes cruising down city streets, with many urban riders now using e-bikes as their primary mode of transport.

And it’s easy to see why. They take a lot of the effort out of cycling – ideal for commuters who don’t want to arrive at work tired and sweaty – are cheaper to run than cars, and let you feel the wind in your hair while getting from A to B.

If you’ve clicked on this article, you’re probably considering buying an e-bike for yourself. Perhaps you’re already a cyclist who wants a ride that’s easier and less tiring, or maybe you currently drive but want to switch out your car journeys for a bit of exercise.

Either way, we’re here to help. Here, we’ll take a look at the benefits of e-bikes, weighing up the pros and cons of making the switch for both current cyclists and motorists.

Understanding the Appeal of Electric Bikes

There’s plenty to love about electric bikes.

First of all, they help you to go further and faster than on a regular bike thanks to the nifty little motor which takes the strain out of cycling and gives you a boost whenever you need it, whether that’s jetting off from a red light or heaving yourself up a hill.

Statistics show that people who have an e-bike cycle more, so they’re great for getting you in the saddle more often, if that’s your goal.

Plus, they can save you money, they’re great for commuting, and they’re even safer than regular bikes in many ways.

Bicycle vs E-Bike

First of all, let’s take a look at the benefits of switching to an e-bike for current cyclists.

The Upgrade: From Traditional to Electric Bikes

It’s easy to believe that having an electric bike enhances the cycling experience. You can travel further and for longer with less effort thanks to the motor, and you’ll no longer be defeated by strong headwinds or tough climbs.

If you cycle to commute, you’ll certainly notice the difference when you can arrive at work without being drenched in sweat, exhausted and in need of a shower and a sit down before you can start your work day. Leisure riders will also feel the benefit of motor assistance, particularly if you want to tackle more difficult terrains without so much physical strain.

Statistics also show that people with e-bikes are twice as likely as regular riders to get out there and ride – largely to do with all of the benefits we’ve already mentioned – so if you already enjoy cycling but want to get out there a little more, investing in an e-bike could be the perfect choice.

Cost-Benefit Analysis for Cyclists Buying an E-Bike

Okay, there’s no two ways about it – electric bikes are expensive. You’ll generally be hard pushed to find a decent e-bike for less than £1,000, and you can spend significantly more than that for more premium models.

However, maintaining an e-bike typically costs about the same as maintenance for a regular bike. Most components are generic between regular bikes and e-bikes, and of course keeping it clean, making sure the tyres are inflated, the chain and cables are lubed and the battery is properly charged will help maintain lifespan in the long run.

You should also consider the potential long-term savings. Yes, the initial cost of an e-bike is rather high, but if you use it more to get around to your day-to-day activities, you’ll save money on fuel and public transport.

If you cycle for exercise, you could save money on a gym membership by investing in a bike you actually want to ride.

Plus, there’s no real need to worry about the cost of charging your e-bike: on average, it will cost between £0.20 to £0.40 per charge. Considering many e-bikes can get you as far as 80km on a single charge – often a whole week of commuting – this cost really is quite negligible.

Car vs Electric Bike

If you usually use a car as your primary mode of transport, making the switch to an electric bike could seem all the more daunting. However, there are so many benefits to choosing an e-bike over a car – for your wallet, for your health, and for the environment – that we’re sure you’d never look back.

The Switch: From Cars to E-Bikes

There’s no arguing with the fact that running an e-bike is more environmentally-friendly than running a car. When you consider the fact that one passenger vehicle emits 42g CO2 per kilometre, while an e-bike emits just 7g of CO2 per kilometre, the benefits are abundantly clear.

There are also personal benefits to choosing an e-bike over a car. For one, you’ll naturally get more exercise, which will boost not only physical health but mental health, too. You’ll also be able to avoid traffic by utilising urban bike lanes, enjoy greener and more scenic journeys, and explore more of your town or city than you could on four wheels.

Cost-Benefit Analysis for Car Drivers

As we mentioned earlier, it costs between £0.20 to £0.40 to fully charge an electric bike. If your e-bike can get you as far as 80km on a single charge – which might well be enough to cover all of your commutes for a week – that really isn’t much money at all.

Fuel costs are currently very expensive, and very volatile. It might cost you £50 or even £100 to fill up your car, and while this could get you 200 miles or more, that’s still far, far more expensive than the equivalent e-bike charge.

Now, we’re not going to be unrealistic and work on the basis that you’d switch ALL of your journeys to pedal power if you bought an e-bike, but you’re bound to save money on fuel by switching to cycling for even some of your commutes – and we reckon you’ll feel much better, too.

Long term savings are also significant – e-bikes are cheaper to maintain than cars, they’re cheaper or even free to park, and you don’t need to pay for MOT and road tax.

Common Concerns and Misconceptions about Electric Bikes

While e-bikes are getting increasingly popular, their relative newness means there are still a fair few concerns and misconceptions commonly held about them.

A big one is legality, and that’s fair enough, as the laws around e-bikes can be quite confusing.

In the UK, the EU and Australia, the motor on an e-bike cannot prove pedal assistance when you reach 15mph (25kph). You can, of course, ride faster than that, but it needs to be under your own steam.

In the US, the motor can legally keep going up to 20mph (32kph) on Class 2 e-bikes, or 28mph (45km/h) for Class 3.

If you’re over 14 in England, Scotland and Wales, you don’t need tax, insurance or a licence to ride an electric bike on the road – though we’d always recommend making sure you’re appropriately insured against personal accident and third-party damages.

Another common concern is battery life: no-one wants to be caught short with a flat battery. Many e-bikes can do as much as 50 miles (80km) in a single charge, but plenty can do much more than that. Plus, a lot of e-bikes have digital panels on the handlebars which tell you exactly how much battery you have remaining, and some models come with removable batteries you can switch out, or even dual batteries for twice the power.

Of course, even if the worst should happen and you run out of juice, you can still ride your e-bike like a normal bike, so you won’t be left stranded.

One of the most common claims made by cyclists about e-bikes is that they are ‘cheating’. While the motor does take the strain out of cycling in many ways, there are still plenty of health and fitness benefits to riding an e-bike – certainly more than there are to driving a car – and anything that gets people onto a bike saddle is a win in our book.

Choosing the Right E-Bike

When you’ve made the decision to buy an electric bike, next comes the fun part: bike shopping.

With so many different e-bikes on the market, it can be tricky to decide which one is right for you.

Budget will, of course, play a huge role in the decision-making process, but as with any investment, it’s generally not a good idea to skimp out on a cheaper model that might need replacing in a few years. Instead, shop around for an e-bike that’s going to offer the most long-term value, including quality components, good battery range, and durability, rather than going for the cheapest option in the short term.

It’s also important to consider your lifestyle and what you’re going to use the bike for. Will you be commuting in a city, and therefore need a nifty urban road bike? Will you be going off-road, and need a sturdier ride or even a fat bike? Do you need to be mindful of storage and consider investing in a folding e-bike? Or do you want a bike that you can ride to work on during the week, and then use to explore the countryside on weekends?

There’s an e-bike for all of these types of rider and more, so it’s worth sitting down and thinking about what you’ll use the bike for before you part with your cash.

Factors like design, style, and functionality will also play a role – no one wants to ride an ugly bike – so don’t be ashamed to take into account the look, feel, colour and design of e-bikes when you’re shopping.

Should I Buy an E-Bike?

Whether or not you should buy an electric bike ultimately comes down to your personal circumstances.

You should consider whether you can afford the initial cost, what you’re realistically going to use an e-bike for, how much it will cost in the long run compared to your current mode of transport, and how having an electric bike will impact your lifestyle.

While electric bikes are an excellent choice for lots of different kinds of rider, there’s no getting away from the fact that they are expensive pieces of kit, and you should always weigh up the pros and cons of the investment based on your own personal circumstances before taking the plunge.

1. Cowboy

A highlight with Cowboy is their app – a very useful thing to have on your handlebars. It includes navigation, ride data, location tracking and more. The bike’s smart wireless charging means you can use the app and charge your phone on the go. 

E-bikes do more than you might think for your fitness, and the Cowboy app allows you to track your fitness levels and see how your stats compare to the Cowboy online community. You can also sync up with your favourite fitness app. 

Cowboy bikes don’t have as long a range as some rivals – an average of 43 miles. However, this should be more than adequate for most city commuters. The removable battery takes 3.5 hours to charge fully. As a side note, until self-charging e-bikes become a reality, removable batteries are a good feature to look for on an e-bike – you can top up at work, and rest assured you’ve got more than enough juice to get you home!

Aventon stocks lots of different models in each category at different price points, and all of its bikes are stylish and premium-looking.

The brand is based in the US, but outsources production to China, resulting in a fleet of e-bikes that is relatively affordable while being full of top of the range tech.

12. Cyrusher

Cyrusher started life as a small company in China, selling bicycle parts online. Now, it’s a global company selling high-performance e-bikes with warehouses around the world that enable delivery times in just a couple of days.

Cyrusher bikes ship from distribution centres in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Poland, Czech Republic, and Japan, and its e-bike range includes options for mountain bikers, city riders, and everything in between.

With their brightly-coloured frames and rims, Cyrusher bikes are bound to turn heads, and their quality components make them fun to ride too.

13. sixthreezero

While Sixthreezero does sell electric bikes, it isn’t solely an electric bike brand. Sixthreezero started life in coastal Southern California, where its founders fell in love with the beach cruiser bike culture and lifestyle. Simple cruiser bicycles that are comfortable, durable and reliable are Sixthreezero’s main product, and its well-made electric bikes are in a similar style.

Fairly new on the e-bike scene, C3STROM was created in 2020 by its group of engineer, designer, and environmental activist founders who all share a love of riding. 15. Veloretti (Electric Bikes Range)

Veloretti bikes are designed in Amsterdam and handcrafted in Europe. The company’s mission is to o make city transportation easy and enjoyable, with an e-bike to get you there in style. As such, the e-bikes feature a timeless look and simple efficiency.

Though they don’t have the same tech features as some rivals, they’re beautiful to look at. The company sum it up pretty well in their own words: “A Veloretti is just a no-nonsense bicycle with a contemporary design and a good price.”

Veloretti offers two electric models, the Ivy and the Ace. There are options for single drive, three gears, or three gears with double handbrakes on either model. 

Everything serves its purpose smoothly and effectively. There’s an efficient mid-drive Bafang motor, and stepless Enviolo automatic shifting on the models with three gears. The smart battery can be removed for security, or swapped with a fresh one rides beyond the estimated 37 – 74 mile range.

Whichever model you choose, their looks will turn heads. They’re a seamless blend of vintage and modern styling, available in muted neutrals or classic black colours.

16. Specialized Bikes (Electric Range)

Specialized e-bikes aren’t cheap, but with this brand you’re getting an incredibly high-quality bike. The e-bike range consistently attracts rave reviews from the biking community, and with good reason.

There are three ranges – Road, Mountain and Active. Active will be the range suited to the average commuter, and has the option of a-frame (Vado) or step-through (Como) models. There’s also a choice between full-power or super-lightweight models.

The Active range of e-bikes are fast, functional and versatile. They’re perhaps not the most outstanding looks-wise, but are a joy to ride with an 80mm front suspension fork, high-volume tires, a suspension seatpost and an ergonomic riding position. 

Specialized’s MasterMind motor control helps you get the most out of your gear changes, and hydraulic brakes give you excellent stopping power. 

As you’d expect from a brand as invested in technology and research as Specialized, the range is full of smart features too. The in-built display features Garmin Radar for detecting vehicles, Mission Control ride diagnostics, and wireless software updates.

The lightweight SL options are a pared down version that at first glance look like a standard bike. You don’t get the sale tech package (though you can connect your phone to the Specialized app) but the benefit gained is an extremely lightweight bike with a range of up to 90 miles. There’s an optional range-extender add-on too. 

17. Trek + Electra

Trek Bikes is regarded as one of the “Big Three” bike companies, together with Giant and Specialized. The range of this brand is huge, particularly as Trek are the parent company for Electra, and combine these popular and retro-cool city e-bikes in their range online.

Trek e-bikes follow the standard set by their non-electric siblings. You can expect excellent quality, great warranties, and the support of a vast network of dealers, ensuring that parts and maintenance are readily available.

Trek e-bikes range widely in price. However, lower-end and commuter models fall into the medium range. They’re built using high-quality materials like steel, alloy and carbon fibre, meaning Trek Bikes’ e-bikes are durable, and capable of withstanding  tough terrains and harsh weather.

Trek incorporates the powerful Bosch motor, making their e-bikes fast and capable.  This motor is standard on Trek’s Verve, Allant, and District ranges. There are three power levels, the Active Line, Active Line Plus, or Performance line, and these come with one of two interactive displays, or a smartphone hub.

The standard battery has a range of up to 50 miles, and the Powerube 500 add-on extends this to up to 80 miles. Both are removable, and charge fully in 4.5 hours.

You can choose to have the Bosch motor with certain bikes from the Electra Go! range too, or stick with the lightweight and pared down  Electra Go! Motor Option.

18. Schindelhauer (E-Bike Range)

Berlin-based Schindelhauer design technologically advanced, yet straightforward bikes. They value a good design and practicality above all else, and focus on minimalistic bikes suitable for everyday use. 

The range isn’t huge, but filled with beautiful, clean designs, crafted with exceptional attention to detail. All Schindelhauer bikes use a low-maintenance CDX belt drive for reliable, grease free riding. 

The e-models reflect Schindelhauer’s typical design and riding characteristics. However, when going electric you also get the bonus of powerful electric support with up to 15 mph performance. The “made of one mould” design and the specially developed frame optimises the integration of the motor, allowing for a sporty, agile riding experience. 

You can choose from single speed or 8-speed pedelec options. 8-speeds have Bosch Active Line Plus motor with Purion display, while single speeds have MAHLE Ebikemotion motor and are pretty much indistinguishable from their non-electric counterparts, for those who like a more minimalist look.

The Pinion models let you choose from a 6- or 9-speed Pinion C-Line drive. The top of the range Envilio e-bikes have enviolo AUTOMATiQ stepless transmission, and a Bosch Performance Line motor with a Kiox display.

There are both a-frame and step-through e-bikes. All models are classically styled, with beautiful vintage-style details and muted or neutral colour options.

19. BirdBike

But what if there was a way to be kept updated on the safety of your bike even when you aren’t with it? 

Luckily, there are bike security devices on the market that can be connected to your phone to give you GPS updates, push notifications and even alert calls that keep you in the know about the safety and whereabouts of your bike, no matter where you are.

Bike Alarm That Alerts Your Phone

If you need that extra bit of peace of mind when leaving your bike, investing in a bike alarm that alerts your phone is a brilliant idea.

There are a few of these alarms on the market: some alert you via an app and push notifications, and some even call your phone to let you know if your bike’s been moved.

How Does AlterLock Work?

AlterLock fits onto your bike and notifies your phone when the device detects movement while your bike is locked away. It also blares out a 95db alarm – louder than a lawnmower – if your bike is moved while locked.

When motion is detected, the AlterLock app will call your phone with its own notification sound, so you can easily distinguish it from a regular text or phone call and instantly know that something is happening to your bike.

The ‘lock’ mode is toggled by you through the app, and you can also use the app to configure the alarm and set the motion detection sensitivity. Plus, as long as your smartphone is in close proximity, you can turn ‘lock’ mode on and off using a button on the device itself, which sits on or underneath your bike’s bottle cage, so you don’t need to take off your gloves and pull out your phone to get riding.

If your bike is unfortunately stolen – despite the loud alarm and alert – the AlterLock will track it once per minute with GPS so you can monitor its location. If it’s moved to a place where there is no GPS signal, the device then uses WiFi signals to determine its approximate location to help the police search for it.

AlterLock works slightly differently to other tracking devices in that it can track your bike’s location independently of your smartphone’s Bluetooth connection – so even if your bike ends up hundreds of miles away, the device will still transmit location information.

There are lots of misconceptions around what it is legal and illegal for cyclists to do on the roads, or even what cyclists should be doing to be a considerate road user. This confusion has resulted in many an argument between motorists and cyclists, and contributes towards accidents on the roads.

In early 2022, the Highway Code was updated to improve clarity, implementing a hierarchy of road users depending on the amount of risk they pose. This gave cyclists some more freedoms to better protect themselves, for example formalising the advice to ride in the middle of the lane where safer, but also some more responsibilities when it comes to protecting more vulnerable road users like pedestrians and horses.

Here, we’ll take you through all of the laws, rules and guidelines in the UK Highway Code for cyclists, explaining what you legally can and cannot do, what you should do for your own safety and the safety of others, and explain how these rules have changed from the previous Highway Code.

UK Highway Code for Cyclists: Summary

Rules 59 to 82 of the Highway Code are concentrated on cycling, but the official documents can be a bit wordy. Below, we’ve summarised the key rules and recommendations for cyclign in Britain, including what cycling can legally do, what they are advised to do and what they are not allowed to do.

Rule 59: Cyclists should avoid wearing clothing that can get caught in the chain or obscure bicycle lights. They should also wear a cycle helmet that conforms to the current regulations, is the correct size and is correctly fastened, and fluorescent/light-coloured clothing is recommended for visibility.

Rule 60: At night you must have white front and red rear lights lit, and your bike must be fitted with a red rear reflector and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1/10/85.

Rule 61: Use cycle lanes where they make your journey safer and easier – cyclists are not obliged to use them.

Rule 62: When using cycle tracks – routes for cyclists that are physically protected from motor traffic – cyclists must keep to the side intended for cyclists and not enter into the pedestrian footpath. If there is no separate footpath, you should take care when passing pedestrians.

Rule 63: Take care when passing pedestrians, horse riders or horse-drawn vehicles – do not pass them at speed or too close, and you should not pass a horse on its left.

Rule 64: You must not cycle on a pavement.

Rule 65: Most bus lanes can be used by cyclists as indicated on signs. Be careful when doing so. Do not pass between the kerb and a bus when it is at a stop.

Rule 66: Cyclists should:

• Ensure they keep control of their cycle, including not carrying anything that could make them lose their balance or that might get tangled in bike
• Be considerate of other road users in general, including using a bell to make their presence known
• Be considerate of other road users when riding in groups, including allowing drivers to overtake when you think it’s safe
  • You can ride two abreast, and it may be safer to do so
• Not ride close behind a vehicle in case it stops suddenly

Rule 67: You should:

• Remain aware of your surroundings by looking around before turning or pulling away
• Look out for obstructions in the road
• Leave a door’s width or one metre when passing parked vehicles
• Watch out for pedestrians stepping into your path
• Be aware of other road users
• Use signals to show your intention
• Take care near traffic calming features like road humps and narrowings
• Only pass on the left of large vehicles when cycling on the road

Rule 68: You must not:

• Carry a passenger unless your bike has been built or adapted to do so
• Hold onto a moving vehicle or trailer
• Ride dangerously, carelessly or inconsiderately
• Ride when under the influence of drugs or alcohol, including medicine

Rule 69: You must obey all traffic signs and traffic light signals.

Rule 70: When parking your bike, find a conspicuous location where it can be seen by passers-by, use cycle parking facilities where possible, don’t create an obstruction or hazard, and secure it well.

Rule 71: At traffic lights, you must not cross the stop line when the lights are red.

Rule 72: Road positioning – there are two basic positions to adopt depending on the situation.

1. Ride in the centre of your lane to make yourself as visible as possible – this is used on quiet roads, in slower moving traffic, and when approaching junctions or narrowings where it’d be unsafe for drivers to overtake you
2. On the left – On busy roads, you should keep 0.5 metres away from the kerb, and further where it’s safer. You should allow faster-moving vehicles to overtake where it is safe to do so.

Rule 73: At junctions:

• Use cycle facilities, eg small cycle traffic lights, where it’s safer and easier to do so
• If there are no separate cycle facilities, act like you’re driving a motor vehicle
• Position yourself in the centre of your lane where safe. If this doesn’t feel safe, you can dismount and walk your bike across the junction.

Rule 74: When turning:

• If turning left, watch out for other vehicles turning into or out of the side road. Check for other cyclists or motorcyclists before signalling, and do not ride on the inside of vehicles signalling or slowing down to turn left.
• If turning right, check the traffic then signal and move into the centre of the road, waiting for a safe gap before turning. You might want to dismount and push your bike across the road if safer.
• When turning into or out of a side road, give way to pedestrians.

Rule 75: Two stage turns – at some signal-controlled junctions, cyclists may be instructed to turn right in two stages:

1. When the traffic lights go green, cyclists turning should go straight ahead to the location on the road marked with a cycle symbol and turn arrow, and wait.
2. When the traffic lights on the far side of the junction which are now facing the cyclists are green, they can then turn.

Rule 76: When going straight ahead at a junction, you have priority over traffic waiting to turn into or out of a side road, unless road markings say otherwise. Be aware of other drivers, especially slow-moving lorries and other long vehicles.

Rule 77: When crossing fast or busy main roads, you might find it safer and easier to push your bike across on foot, wait for a safe gap in the traffic to cross, and make use of traffic islands to help.

Rule 78: When using a roundabout without cycle facilities, adhere to rules 184 to 190 of the Highway Code.

Rule 79: At roundabouts, you can ride in the left or right-hand lane, moving left when approaching your exit and signalling right to show when you aren’t leaving the roundabout. It’s also fine to dismount and walk your bike on the pavement or verge if you feel safer doing so. You should always watch out for traffic and be aware that drivers may not easily see you.

Where a roundabout has separate cycle facilities, use them if they make your journey safer and easier – but you’re not obliged to use them.

Rule 80: Give plenty of room to long vehicles on a roundabout – do not ride in the space they need to get around it.

Rule 81: Do not ride across equestrian crossings. Do not ride across a pelican, puffin or zebra crossing. Dismount and wheel your bike across.

Rule 82: You are allowed to cycle across toucan crossings, which are push-button operated light-controlled crossings allowing cyclists and pedestrians to share crossing space and cross at the same time.

Cycle tracks on the opposite sides of the road might be linked by cycle-only signalled crossings – you may ride across these but you must not do so until the light is green, and you should be aware of pedestrians.

Take extra care when crossing level crossings and tramways, and make sure to dismount where a ‘cyclist dismount’ sign is displayed.

New Highway Code Rules for Cyclists

In early 2022, the Highway Code was updated with some changes for motorists and cyclists alike, to enhance safety for all road users.

The updated code introduced a hierarchy of road users, which means that those who pose the greatest risk to others have a higher level of responsibility, placing drivers at the top.

Cyclists have a higher responsibility than horses and pedestrians, so should be particularly aware of their safety, but nonetheless should have regard for all road users’ safety as well as their own.

As such, cyclists should not pass pedestrians, people on horses or horse-drawn vehicles at speed. You are now advised to slow down when necessary, let people know you’re there, and not pass a horse on its left-hand side.

Cyclists have long been advised to ride in the centre of the lane for better visibility and to deter unsafe overtaking, but the Highway Code has now been updated to formalise this advice. It states that cyclists should cycle in the middle of the lane on quiet roads, in slow-moving traffic, and when approaching junctions/road narrowings, and also says that cyclists should maintain 0.5m distance from the kerb when on busier or faster roads.

The new code also clarifies that cyclists can ride two abreast. This has always been the case, but it is often a source of conflict on roads and the change in the language emphasises rider safety.

It also confirms that cyclists can pass stationary or slow-moving traffic on the right or the left.

The 2022 update to the Highway Code also has new rules for cyclists at junctions, for example that, when turning into or out of a junction, cyclists should give way to people who are crossing or waiting to cross. The new Rule 75 outlines two-stage turns at some signal-controlled junctions, and the new code also says that cyclists now have right of way when cycling straight ahead at junctions unless signs say otherwise.

Plus, the update clarifies that cyclists have priority on roundabouts, and that drivers/motorcyclists shouldn’t pass cyclists in their lane.
