If there’s one thing that can be relied upon – it’s that you can’t rely on the weather! Cyclists are more painfully aware of this than anyone else and a bad weather day can really spoil your journey. That’s why cycling jackets are so important and rank highly on any cyclist’s shopping list.

What to Look for in a Rain Jacket for Cycling

Waterproofing is the most obvious and first thing that you should look for in a jacket. Every jacket comes with a waterproofing rating so you can get a good idea of what to expect. Some jackets claim to be waterproof but are only useful in light rain.

The fabric should be breathable (you don’t want heat and sweat to build up inside) and lightweight so that it doesn’t impede your cycling motion. Tapered seams will stop water from infiltrating at the joints and a high collar is fantastic to keep wind chill at bay. Some jackets also come with a “dropped tail.” This protects you from water splashing off your back wheel.

Look out for visibility features too. Since you’ll mostly be wearing your jacket in the cold, dark winter months, reflective strips are all but essential. Jackets vary in what they offer. Some are fully reflective, others come with reflective strips on the back or the shoulders. Price, of course, is a factor. Jackets range from budget to mmore expensive options like Gore-Tex. Finally, make sure that the jacket has enough pockets to store your cycling essentials.

To Hood or Not to Hood

Whether or not to wear a hooded jacket remains one of the great cycling debates! Hoods are useful because they provide extra protection against the rain and the wind and they’ll keep you feeling a little warmer in winter.

On the other hand, a loose hood is a cyclist’s worst nightmare. Hoods that flap around impair vision and can even be dangerous. The last thing you want to do is cycle along a dark road in the rain with a hood covering half of your vision. Hoods also add weight (creating drag) and some accumulate water. Moisture can gather on top and then drip down as you cycle, making for an uncomfortable experience.

Opinions differ, but if you are going to opt for a hood, look for a quality, well designed one that’s adjustable. Some are even detachable and others can be worn either under or over your helmet.

Waterproof Rating: Fully Waterproof

Waterproof membrane

Rear Illumination

Sealed seams

Designed explicitly for the daily commute (and with a lower riding position than other offerings from Rapha) this jacket manages to be both lightweight and durable with no compromises made on either side.

Waterproofing is top notch with sealed seams to prevent water ingress and a special membrane on the inside of the jacket. The membrane keeps water at bay but it’s light and airy so you won’t have to worry about sweat building up. A mesh lining up the back helps with ventilation.

You also get welted zip pockets (enough to hold essentials like your keys and phone). The zipper is made using “Aquaguard” technology – in laymen’s terms that just means that it’s super waterproof and not a single drop of moisture can find its way inside.

A looped fastening makes the jacket easy to access so you won’t have to spend hours grappling with the zip, something that can be a big problem with cold hands.

Small touches are what make this jacket so special. The zip is slightly off centre so you won’t have to worry about chaffing on your chin and a reflective gradient dot pattern lights up on the back. Since these jackets are mostly worn at night or in bad weather, that illumination makes a big difference. The Rapha will keep you safe, dry and, above all else, comfortable.

Waterproof Rating: Fully Waterproof

Adjustable hood

Dual layers

Chest pockets

Waterproof, windproof, breathable and lightweight, the Helly Hansen offers everything you could want from a cycling rain jacket. Better still, it crams all of these features into a bright yellow package that stands out vividly in even the poorest light.

Reflective strips boost visibility even higher and ensure that you won’t ever be missed. The jacket is designed specifically for urban cycling and engineered with an articulated cut for extra mobility as you nip through the traffic.

Waterproofing is, of course, the big area of interest and the Helly Hansen doesn’t disappoint. The combination of Polyamide shell and Polyester lining offers two layers of protection and also gives the jacket its windproof credentials.

The two part design is lightweight and pleasantly breathable (this is one of the lightest jackets on the list at just 450g). Chest and hand pockets offer plenty of room to store essentials.

This jacket comes with a hood. Fortunately (and unlike many other cycling rain jackets) the hood and hem are fully adjustable so you should be able to find a configuration that fits. With a few adjustments, it’s quite easy to stop the hood from flapping in the wind and get a secure fit.

Having a hood further boosts the jacket’s all weather credentials. Throw in some reflective strips and we’d say that the Helly Hansen offers everything you could need to get through the winter.

Machine washable

ProViz is a big name in the sports world, and their Nightrider jacket doesn’t disappoint. This is the jacket to go for if you’re worried about visibility. Not only is the jacket itself glaringly bright (you can choose between neon pink and the even more vivid yellow) but it comes with massive reflective strips around the shoulders, back and waist. Quite simply, it’s the brightest cycling jacket you’ll find and will ensure that you’re visible in even the lowest light.

That’s not all, though. The material is fully waterproof while retaining breathability and the zip is engineered to prevent water ingress. It also comes with a small “zip garage” at the top. That might not sound like much, but it’s a feature that anyone who has ever experienced neck chaffing will certainly appreciate! Even the cuffs are adjustable. You can widen them for increased airflow in the summer or tighten them to keep the water out in winter. That, of course, makes the jacket an all-season choice.

The collar comes with a soft microfleece. It’s warm and snug and the material is so soft that it’s hardly noticeable – you won’t experience any chafing. Waterproof pockets and an adjustable waistband complete the package.

4. Rapha Commuter Lightweight Jacket

Waterproof Rating: Fully waterproof

Optional hood

Another Rapha variant, this jacket is slightly cheaper than their other addition on the list but it’s still designed with the commute in mind. The jacket is cut loose enough to be worn over a shirt, jumper or blazer, so it’s ideal on the way to the office. It even accommodates backpacks, with a mesh covering around the shoulders for extra breathability. Two pockets offer ample storage space and there’s an optional hood. It can be attached, detached or worn underneath a helmet.

This jacket is all about convenience. It folds down into a compact stuff sack that will fit inside any bag. You also get some reflective dots along the lower back for increased visibility behind. These dots are designed to appear just below any rucksack and at the eye level of motorists, so you should have no problem cycling in low light. The jacket even has an integrated hanger hoop for additional convenience.

Water and windproofing are of course top of the range. The 100% polyester is fully waterproof while remaining breathable. The zip pockets are protected against liquid incursion by stay-down pullers. Seam stitching along the rest of the jacket will keep any moisture out. With its relaxed fit and lightweight fabric, this jacket is the perfect commuter companion.

5. Chrome Storm Salute Commute Jacket

Waterproof Rating: Fully waterproof

Storm hood

Reflective sleeves

Seam sealed

It might come with a hefty price tag, but the Storm Salute more than justifies the outlay. Waterproofing is top of the range due to a 2.5, fully waterproof rain shell.

The pockets are similarly protected to prevent even light water ingress. At the other end of the weather scale, ventilation along the back of the jacket will keep you cool and sweat free.

You also get plenty of storage with a spacious back cargo pocket and an interior one for your phone. The latter is easy access for added convenience. The Storm Salute is one for the style conscious cyclist. Its laid back, clean cut looks give it a modern aesthetic that’s unmatched across other jackets.

That Storm Salute has been able to pair style with functionality is a triumph. The jacket is fully seam sealed, has the second highest waterproofing rating of any on the list and even comes with a fully adjustable storm hood.

A drop tail hem offers protection against splashes from the rear wheel and there are visibility strips along the sleeves, cuffs and lower back. To top things off, this jacket comes with a 365 day warranty. When it comes to style fused with functionality, you can’t go wrong here.

Waterproof Rating: ePTFE

Military grade materials

Temperature regulation

The Eigar will likely be well above most people’s budget for a cycling jacket, but for anyone willing to take the plunge it represents the absolute pinnacle of what a jacket can be. Made using Swiss engineered, military grade materials it’s the only ePTFE waterproof/windproof and breathable jacket on the list.

This jacket is more than weatherproof. The Schoeller fabric uses a special membrane to regulate body temperate while keeping water and wind at bay. It will keep you dry and warm (but never too warm) and it’s incredibly breathable.

Full seam tapering keeps even the worst weather at bay and there are premium touches everywhere. You get Italian Riri and German Prym metal snaps, as well as YKK weatherproof zippers. These do more than just give the jacket a stylish look. They guarantee complete imperviousness to water. A wool outer shell completes the package with another warm layer.

It almost goes without saying that a jacket this expensive has a style like no other. The military yet modern aesthetic ensures that it stands out from the crowd.

We love the subtle detailing around the shoulders and the clean lines. If you want a luxury, top of the range jacket that’s likely to last a lifetime, then the Eigar is the best on the market (as long as money is no object!).

Waterproof Rating: ADD

Adjustable hood

One hour dryness

Three zip pockets

Coming back down to earth we have a much more reasonably priced jacket from BTWIN. Despite its lower price, this is much more than just a budget option. The fabric is specially coated and BTWIN boasts that it will keep you dry for up to an hour in the rain, which is more than enough for the daily commute. It comes with thick wadding for warmth, although it’s worth noting that it’s only designed for use in temperatures above zero.

Elsewhere, you get three spacious zip up pockets and there’s some excellent ventilation by way of openings under the arms. Those vents can be closed in colder weather, of course, giving you a degree of temperature control. The accompanying hood is fully adjustable (so you’ll be able to fit it under or over your helmet) and the same coating that makes the jacket waterproof also keeps wind chill at bay.

This is the jacket for the environmentally conscious cyclist. It has a new, Eco design that reduces its carbon footprint. You also get PPE certified reflective strips and a reflective magnet flap on the front. These are visible up to 50m when they’re caught in headlights so you can proceed with peace of mind at night. Far from just a budget option, this is a quality, all weather and all season jacket – one that won’t let you down or break the bank.

What to Look for in a Rain Jacket for Cycling

The primary purpose you’re looking for in a rain jacket is for it to keep you dry. However, it is likely you may wear this jacket when it isn’t raining so it is helpful to consider other factors.

Firstly, is it comfortable and breathable? Trespass defines breathability as “the ability of a fabric to absorb moisture and release it through the material itself, allowing it to breathe“. Basically a breathable material will stop you from overheating, and will also allow air flow.

This is particularly important for cycling as you may sweat so you want a rain jacket that will keep you, and your armpits, as dry as possible!

Secondly, how easily does it pack away? Perhaps you just got caught in a short shower, or the forecast predicted rain but it stayed dry. You may want to take your rain jacket off mid ride, or when you arrive at your destination. In this situation it is useful if your jacket is lightweight, compact and foldable so you can strap it to your pannier rack, or pop it in your bag.

Finally, is it reflective? Your rain jacket will be your outer layer. Depending on when and where you cycle, it can be handy for it to also serve as a means of keeping you as visible as possible to others. Don’t worry as this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be bright yellow!

There are plenty of subtle and stylish options in a wide range of colours, many of which are either waterproof or water resistant. If visibility is essential, check out our list of the best reflective cycling jackets on the market.

Waterproof vs Water Resistant Jackets

We’ve established that the main feature we’re looking for in a rain jacket is to keep you dry and we’ve mentioned that jackets can be waterproof or water resistant, but what does this mean?

It is an important distinction to understand as it is the difference between staying dry in a heavy downpour, or running the risk of getting a bit wet. The Mountain Warehouse has put together this useful guide to explain the two terms in more detail.

Essentially, water resistant jackets have a waterproofing repellent coating which will repel beads of water so they roll off but they do not have taped seams. Waterproof jackets also have a waterproof coating on the outer fabric but also have fully taped seams and may also have a built in membrane lining.

There are also various waterproof ratings which indicate how much rain an item of clothing can withstand. It is worth thinking about what you would be using your rain jacket for so you can decide if you need it to be able to only be showerproof, or if you need it to hold up for a long period of time riding in persistent heavy rain.

We’ve made sure to let you know if the jackets are waterproof or water resistant in our below list.

Rapha are well known for producing high quality stylish cycle clothing and this women’s commuter jacket is no exception.

Described as “the definitive jacket for riding to work in wet conditions”, they’ve opted for a durable but lightweight fabric with a hydrophobic membrane.

The seams are also all sealed and the inside of the fabric has a dry touch print so it is breathable. In addition to this the hem is elasticated, and the cuffs have internal storm binding to keep water out.

On the outside, there is a full length waterproof zip which they’ve strategically placed off centre to avoid it rubbing on your chin when zipped up.

A handy hood is also included which can be worn underneath a helmet. This is particularly useful for very heavy rain as it also has an integrated drawcord. The hood can also be easily packed away using a reflective strap.

With regards to visibility, the jacket has a reflective gradient dot print on the tail which is another thoughtful placement so you can wear a backpack and still be seen, especially by drivers as it is in their eyeline.

You’ll also be visible on your ride thanks to a reflective pixel print pattern and oversized dot on the lower back which, like their other commuter jacket, has been placed so you can wear a backpack and still be seen. This jacket also has reflective cuffs for when you’re signalling.

Decathlon can always be relied on for affordable good quality cycle clothing.

Their BTWIN 500 Women’s Waterproof Urban Cycling Jacket may be the cheapest option on this list but it is by no means compromising on features, in fact quite the opposite!

Starting with waterproofing, Decathlon provides extensive details about the material used and how it is tested. For example, this jacket is able to withstand the average downpour of 60 litres of water per square metre for up to 2 hours thanks to 100% watertight seams and hood!

Next up is visibility. They have positioned the reflective parts based on the “constraints of cycling” which include leaning forwards, wearing a backpack and signalling so 360 degree visibility from up to 50m away is guaranteed at night time.

They’ve also designed the jacket with a cycling specific cut and adjustment options so you can freely move but still be covered from the rain and wind.

Despite being well protected, it is also breathable thanks to a hydrophilic coating and zipped vents under the arms to allow air circulation.

As well as being water and windproof, it’s also practical with two side zipped pockets, and a hood that moves with your head which can be worn over or under your helmet

The entire design process has been well thought through as they’ve reduced the environmental impact of the product through the dyeing process.

However, in case anything does happen to go wrong when using it you’ve got a generous 2 year warranty.

Electric Bike Weight

Electric bike weight may be a contributing factor as to why some people have been put off from purchasing or using one in the past. However, as they’ve become a solid option within the market, new technological advances have meant the weight is far more manageable and less overwhelming than before.

The typical weights of an electric bike, across all styles, roughly ranges from around 11kg to 25kg. The latter is still a reasonable weight for a bike with a motor, but the more expensive the e-bike, usually the lighter it will be.

Therefore, it’s understandable, when comparing electric bikes to normal bikes, that the weight can sometimes seem a little heavy. But doing so has no real value: they’re chalk and cheese, and in all honesty, you can’t compare them.

Why Are E-Bikes So Heavy?

Electric bikes are heavy (at least heavier than their non electric counterparts) due to the batteries and motor that they have fitted. Without these elements the bike would not be an electric bike, therefore removing them to make the bicycle lighter is a non starter.

However, as previously noted, electric bikes of late have been shedding the pounds. Many newer models are lighter, and therefore more manageable to ride.

There’s also the positives of having a pedal assist motor, which for sure outweighs any issues you may face with weight! Especially when you consider the list of lightweight electric bikes we’ve picked out. Many may even be lighter than non electric bikes you’ve previously ridden.

Are Heavier Bikes Harder to Ride?

As a rule of thumb, heavier bikes can sometimes be harder to ride, but it’s not always massively noticeable as long as the bike is a good fit, and you’re comfortable with the controls for the motor.

On the other hand, what you may want to consider when owning a heavier bike is how easy it may be for you to carry, or even mount onto the back of your car if you enjoy going away with your bike.

Therefore, although weight can affect the ride quality, it’s definitely not as big an issue compared to whether the bike may be too heavy for you to carry when walking down stairs, etc. But on the plus side, being heavier, it’s harder for thieves to pick up and walk away with…

Benefits of Lightweight E-Bikes

The benefits of owning and riding a lightweight electric bike are first and foremost, that it will feel a little more manoeuvrable in comparison to a really heavy one. This is of course due to there being less mass to move around underneath you while riding.

Next, a lightweight e-bike will feel faster and more manageable when riding up inclines, which is safe to say the circumstance in which most of us want a little extra help.

And of course following on from the previous point regarding the weight of a bike, a lighter electric bike will be easier to carry, mount onto your car and generally just store – say if you hang your bikes up in your garage, or in a bike store at work if you commute in by bike.

The lightest road bike available

Incredibly light, incredibly pricey

Can be taken on a plane

The lightest production electric bike award (currently) goes to the HPS Domestique.

HPS aren’t a hugely well-known brand but for those riders looking for the highest e-road bike to swing their leg over, they’ll probably have come across the Domestique – the only bike HPS currently produce.

The Domestique is, in its essence, a classic carbon race bike but with the addition of a tiny crank-based motor. The motor takes its power from a battery housed in the bike’s bottle.

Pros

  • Custom, handmade carbon fibre frame
  • Motorsport and aeronautical engineering
  • Links with popular GPS devices like Garmin

Cons

  • Bottle based battery is a design concession

Folding electric bike

Made from a carbon-fibre alternative

Plant fibre construction

Hummingbird is the only bike brand with two bikes on our list of the lightest electric bikes available today – not bad for a small company that operates out of a non-descriptive warehouse in the English midlands.

That puts Hummingbird down somewhat, especially when you consider that their parent company, Prodrive, has an astonishing legacy in motorsport.

The Flax version of the Hummingbird folding electric bike uses plant fibres to create a bike that’s equally as strong (and light) as its sister bike included further down this list.

Pros

  • Outstandingly light
  • Folds fast
  • Just enough e-power

Cons

  • Just one colour
  • Single speed

Amazing looking e-road bike

Italian flair

Different builds available

The second electric road bike on our list and this time its from a more well-known brand. Wilier is an Italian bike manufacturer with a long and decorated history in road cycling.

Their attention has turned to electric road bikes in recent years and the brand’s eye for detail is evident in this bike, the Filante Hybrid.

The Filante e-bike features an extremely discrete display system mounted in the bike’s stem and the rear wheel (where the motor is housed) is fitted to the frame with a thru-axle. A thru axle delivers a better ride, but it does throw up issues with connecting the motor. A clever design feature from Wilier means that the thru-axle connects the electronics of the bike automatically when added and disconnects it when its removed.

Pros

  • Different sizes, colours, builds available
  • From a brand with a decorated road cycling history
  • Rear thru axle provides an excellent ride
  • Discrete motor and display

Cons

  • Too race orientated for most

Lightweight

Impressive range

This highly practical folding electric bike is the perfect option for anyone on the go, as well as those limited with storage. Not to mention it astonishingly only comes in at 10.3kg, which is a crazily light weight. Of course, there’s not as much to the bike in comparison to road bikes etc, but this is seriously impressive stuff.

As well as being impressively lightweight, this folding electric bike from Hummingbird also offers an impressive range of up to 50km, which is definitely more than enough for most commuters needs.

In addition, this bike comes in four different colours to suit a wide range of tastes. However, if non of these standard colours take your fancy, there is also the option to have a custom paint job.

When purchasing this electric bike, there’s also the useful additional option to add any accessories you may need such as a lock, bag, or even a different saddle to the standard one.

Pros

  • Commuter-friendly
  • Option for custom paint job
  • Ability to add accessories

Cons

Ribble are one of the bicycle manufacturing greats, having been founded in Preston, England, back in the lat 1800′.s

But while Ribble’s heritage is unquestioned, they aren’t set in their ways and are one of the most innovative bike brands around – and the Ribble Endurance SL e Hero is a great example of this.

This stunning electric road bike has managed to pack an impressive feature list (including top of the line Shimano Dura-Ace 2×12 groupset) and LEVEL DB35 EBM carbon wheels into a total package of just 10.5kg (23lb).

The Endurance’s success is largely down to the lightweight carbon wheels and elite carbon frame, which has also managed to discreetly contain the battery for this bike.

  • Discreetly contained battery

Like many electric road bikes featured on this list, the Addict RC eRide uses a motor from MAHLE – the X20 to be precise. In short, this is the lightest and best e-bike motor for road bikes.

Top-end Shimano Di2 Dura Ace groupset: 11 speed electronic

This highly impressive road machine comes in at 11.3kg: a weight that puts a lot of non electric road bikes to shame. It’s been designed with performance in mind. In Cannondale’s own words, this bike’s design centres around ‘speed, efficiency and handling’.

Not only is is built to handle like no other, it’s also kitted out with the super light top end 11 speed electronic Shimano Di2 Dura Ace groupset. Therefore it’s fair to say Cannondale are not messing around with this lightweight offering.

This bike comes in three sizes which includes: SM, MD and LG. Therefore if you are particularly short or tall, it may not be a good fit for you. It’s also available in only one colour, which is graphite.

This bike also benefits from being fitted with the very streamlined and light ebikemotion rear-hub drive system, which is known for it’s neat aesthetics and powerful nature. Therefore, it’s a solid option.

The Swissrider Urban is the brand’s electric hybrid bike that would suit anyone looking to fly along city streets to and from work. It weighs below 12kg.

Integrated lights

For the uninitiated, Greg Lemond is a famous road cyclist who won the Tour de France back in the 1980s. Today he’s turned his attention to designing a small but mightily fine trio of electric bikes.

The lightest of Lemond’s electric bikes is the Prolog. The bike’s frame is made from carbon fibre which goes some way to explain the bike’s weight, but also uses the popular Mahle motor to leave keep the bike under 12kg.

With plush 38c tyres and top-end 11-speed gearing, the Prolog would make a fine medium-to-long distance commuter bike.

Lightweight

Some may see a road bike with a set of flat bars thrown in, and thus cast this bike off as a hybrid. They may be right, however, coming in at very commendable 12.2kg, it was hard to resist.

As mentioned, this Orbea is basically an electric road bike with flat bars, but given many hybrids side towards relaxed geometry road bikes, one could argue this is just a really stylish and lightweight hybrid. Maybe even the perfect jazzy commuter.

Smart bike with built-in navigation

AI voice controls

Fingerprint unlock and anti-theft GPS

Now this is a cool looking e-bike. It just looks fast and futuristic.

Indeed, this isn’t just an electric bike. This is a smart bike and has incredible useful features such as a built-in navigation, AI voice controls, indicators, fingerprint unlock and anti-theft GPS.

And the list of impressive features doesn’t end there. It uses a belt-drive to keep maintenance to a minimum and has an outstanding range of up to 100km (62 miles).

Urtopia have done an especially god job on the appearance – or lack thereof – of the battery pack as it is discreetly built into the frame, but it is still removable, so you can take it from the bike to charge inside.

And as you might have guessed from the name of the bike: it’s got a carbon frame. Which explains how it’s managed to pack all these awesome features into a total weight of just 15kg (33lb).

The Urtopia bike is available across mainland Europe and north America, but sadly not the UK as it stands.

Pros

  • Belt-drive for low maintenance
  • Discreetly built-in battery pack
  • Carbon frame for lightweight design

Cons

  • Not available in UK
  • Anti-theft GPS can drain battery when parked

Lightweight

Now, I know what you may be thinking, why has an electric cross country mountain bike has been thrown into the mix? Well, it’s an astonishingly light one, that has already won numerous awards.

At only 16.35 kg (lighter than some electric road bikes on the market) for an electric full suspension mountain bike I think it’s without a doubt, a pretty incredible feat of engineering brilliance.

Coming in a choice of four fun and vibrant colours, this bike is definitely not one for the minimalists. It’s quirky, and pretty in your face. But still it’s very streamlined, with no ugly bulky electronics.

Overall this bike is best suited to those who love an off road adventure, but want something super lightweight with the added help from a motor. Additionally, this may also suit those who find gravel bikes a little uncomfortable for riding, as the full suspension helps to absorb any shocks.

Pros

  • Vibrant colors
  • Off road adventure

Cons

  • Front and rear end offer different performance characteristics.

FAQ:

How Do the Performance and Range of These Lightweight E-bikes Compare to Heavier Models?

The performance and range of lightweight electric bikes compared to heavier models can vary significantly, influenced by factors such as battery capacity, motor efficiency, and design. Lightweight e-bikes, often designed with portability and ease of use in mind, may have smaller batteries and motors to save weight. This can affect their range and power output compared to heavier e-bikes, which may accommodate larger batteries and more powerful motors, offering extended range and greater assistance on steep inclines.

However, advancements in battery technology and motor efficiency have narrowed this gap. Lightweight e-bikes are increasingly capable of delivering competitive performance and range, suitable for most urban commuting and leisure cycling needs. For instance, many lightweight models offer ranges that are ample for daily commutes and casual rides, typically between 20 to 50 miles (32 to 80 kilometers) on a single charge, depending on the battery size, rider weight, terrain, and level of assistance used.

In terms of performance, lightweight e-bikes may accelerate more quickly and handle more responsively than their heavier counterparts, thanks to their reduced mass. This can make them particularly appealing for city riding, where agility and the ability to navigate through traffic are advantageous. On the other hand, heavier e-bikes might provide a more stable ride at higher speeds or on rough terrain, thanks to their additional mass and often wider tires.

In summary, while lightweight e-bikes may have once faced significant compromises in performance and range, modern designs offer a compelling balance that meets the needs of many riders. The choice between a lightweight and a heavier e-bike will depend on individual preferences, riding conditions, and priorities, such as the importance of portability versus the need for longer range or greater power.

What Advancements in Technology Have Enabled These Reductions in Weight?

Advancements in technology have played a pivotal role in reducing the weight of electric bikes, making them more accessible and user-friendly. One of the key developments has been in battery technology, where the shift from older battery types to lithium-ion batteries has significantly decreased weight while improving energy density. Lithium-ion batteries offer a superior power-to-weight ratio, meaning they can store more energy in less space and with less weight, a crucial factor for e-bikes where the battery is one of the heaviest components.

Another technological advancement contributing to lighter e-bikes is the use of high-strength, lightweight materials in the construction of frames and components. Materials such as carbon fiber and advanced aluminum alloys have become more prevalent. Carbon fiber, in particular, is renowned for its high stiffness-to-weight ratio, providing strength and durability without the added weight. This material has been instrumental in reducing overall bike weight, making e-bikes easier to handle and transport.

Motor technology has also seen significant improvements. The development of more efficient and compact electric motors has allowed manufacturers to reduce the size and weight of the motor without sacrificing performance. These newer motors can deliver the same or even better power output than older, larger models, contributing to a lighter overall bike.

Furthermore, the integration of components has been optimized in recent years. Designers and engineers have found innovative ways to incorporate the motor and battery into the bike’s frame in a way that minimizes bulk and reduces weight. This integration not only contributes to a sleeker, more aesthetically pleasing design but also improves the bike’s balance and weight distribution, enhancing the riding experience.

These advancements, combined with ongoing research and development in materials science, battery technology, and motor efficiency, continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible, making e-bikes lighter, more efficient, and more appealing to a broader range of cyclists.

Are There Any Trade-Offs in Durability or Ride Comfort with These Lighter Models?

With the reduction in weight of electric bikes through various technological advancements, there are potential trade-offs in terms of durability and ride comfort that riders might experience. Lighter e-bikes often utilize materials like carbon fiber and advanced aluminum alloys for their frames and components to shed weight. While these materials are strong and can offer excellent performance, they may also lead to a different ride feel compared to heavier models made from traditional materials. For instance, carbon fiber is known for its stiffness, which can translate to a more responsive ride but may also result in a harsher feel over rough surfaces, affecting ride comfort.

In terms of durability, the focus on minimizing weight can sometimes result in the use of thinner materials or more minimalist designs, which might not withstand rough handling or heavy loads as well as heavier e-bikes. This doesn’t necessarily mean that lightweight e-bikes are fragile; many are designed with high-quality materials engineered to be both light and durable. However, the balance between weight reduction and durability requires careful design and engineering, and there may be situations where a lighter e-bike could be more susceptible to wear and damage over time, especially when used frequently in challenging conditions.

Additionally, the smaller batteries and motors that contribute to a lighter overall weight may also have implications for the bike’s performance and range. While modern battery technology has made great strides in efficiency, lighter e-bikes with smaller batteries may not offer the same long-range capabilities or power for steep climbs as their heavier counterparts. This could be a trade-off for riders who prioritize extended range or require significant electric assist in hilly terrain.

Ultimately, while lighter electric bikes offer advantages in terms of portability and ease of use, there is a balance to be struck between reducing weight and maintaining durability, ride comfort, and performance. Manufacturers carefully consider these factors to create e-bikes that meet the needs of their intended audience, ensuring that any trade-offs are well justified by the benefits in usability and rider experience.

Riding in the rain can be a cold and miserable business, especially when riding to work: no one wants to start off the day cold and wet. However, there’s some really great trousers and jeans on the market to help keep your legs dry and warm on those wet rides into work.

Our selection of water resistant and waterproof trousers include a generous variety of stylish yet functional picks. You don’t have to compromise your aesthetic to keep dry and warm anymore.

Best Waterproof Cycling Trousers [Men] [Women]

  1. DUER All-Weather Denim

  2. Chrome Storm Rain Pant

  3. Endura Hummvee II Trousers

Water-Resistant vs Waterproof Trousers

Water resistant vs waterproof, is there a difference? The short answer is, yes.

Water resistant trousers have a special coat / membrane on top of the fabric, this helps to keep the rain out, however won’t be as effective. Nor will it keep the rain out for as long as fully waterproof trousers: Water resistant trousers will still bead but eventually the water will absorb through the material.

Waterproof trousers on the other hand will have taped seams on the inside to cover up the stitching, this is where the water will most easily seep through. Waterproof trousers will also be made out of more specialist materials that will usually let sweat particles out but won’t allow water droplets in, keeping you dry from both the outside elements and your own sweat. A win-win combination.

However, though different both waterproof and water resistant will keep you dry in a shower or light rain. Both are great in different ways and can be better suited to a rider depending on their individual needs.

Types of Rainproof Trousers for Cycling to Work

There are lots of different styles of rainproof trousers for riding to work. One of the most popular types are the water repellent denim jeans which keep you looking stylish yet still offer practicality for wet weather commuting. Rainproof jeans can be a great addition to anyone’s wardrobe, our pick of the best cycling jeans is a great tool if you feel jeans are more your thing.

Another style of rainproof cycling trousers are the conventional smart looking trousers that look and feel more like chinos that are often water repellent but not usually fully waterproof. These trousers will often have a membrane that covers the top layer of fabric to keep the elements out so you can arrive at work warm and dry. If this is what you are looking for then our list of the best cycling chinos will be a bit of you.

Similarly, there are also fully taped seamed cycling waterproof overtrousers that have more of a hiking or mountain biking look to them but perform very well in keeping you warm and dry, even if they are a little less aesthetically pleasing. If the baggier fit is more your style you’ll find a more specific list of overtrousers on our piece looking at the best waterproof cycling overtrousers for under £50.

How Much Protection Do You Need?

How much protection you need from the elements on your commute really depends on a few factors, as well as your own personal preferences.

Firstly, the duration of your ride to work will affect how waterproof you need your trousers, the longer the commute the more effective trousers you’ll need as water repellent ones will eventually absorb the water after a while. Therefore long commutes will require more effective protection.

Another factor to consider is the level of protection your bike offers from the rain: do you have mudguards? Mudguards will keep you dry quite effectively by protecting your legs from road spray, therefore you may not need to go all out with a pair of fully waterproof trousers, in this instance water repellent would be suitable and more than adequate.

However, in conclusion, any of these trousers will protect you in all but the most drastic of downpours so whichever takes your fancy will keep you comfortable, stylish and dry.

We love these jeans so much that they’re our #1 recommended cycling jeans for women. A little while ago our co-founder, Pete, reviewed the men’s version and was blown away. The women’s version are equally brilliant. Not only are they fully waterproof and windproof, but they look gorgeous too.

A lot of cycling trousers are water resistant, but the Duer All-Weather have a waterproof membrane to keep you fully protected without compromising on style and comfort.

And these jeans are so comfortable that you’ll forget you’re actually wearing jeans. They have more than enough stretch for cycling (or any activity), and also feature the Duer signature hidden gusset for greater flexibility and range of motion.

The look of these jeans is flattering and chic. Available in two styles, the Straight fit are slim-fitting (without being absolutely skin tight), and the High-rise offer a more relaxed fit.

They also have reflective details under the cuff and at the waistband, and four pockets that are deep enough to keep your keys, money (and anything else) totally safe while you’re on the move.

All in all, these are outstanding jeans that combine beauty along with a host of tech features to keep you warm, dry and super-stylish in the winter.

These chinos are cool in every way: they look great and they’re light and breathable. They’re so great, in fact, that they are our #1 recommend women’s cycling chinos.

The Momentum Chino for women is a trouser that does a remarkable charge of feeling really good, stretchy and breathable while you’re cycling to work but it still manages to look extremely sharp and can fit into an office-environment without anyone suspective that these chinos are built for active performance.

These Ministry of Supply ladies’ chinos are soft, durable and strechy thanks to their blend of “hollow-core” Polyester, Nylon and Elastane.

They’re also quite customisable in terms of style as they have an adjustable inseam so they can’t be worn at full length or ankle length. There are also drawstrings on the inside of the pants and these can be left hanging out or tucked in,

3. Rapha (City Collection)

Ask any keen cyclists what brand they think of when you mention the words “cycling” and “fashion” and Rapha will almost certainly be the answer.

Rapha are very much a Marmite brand – some people love (like, really love) them, while others hate them. This is largely because Rapha is all about exclusivity and their pricing is undoubtedly on the high side. That said, you do get real quality for your money.

The majority of Rapha’s production line in focussed on road cycling. But if you’re after stylish clothes you can cycle in (i.e. something you can ride to work in and then look smart at the office), the Rapha City Collection is nothing short of stunning.

And having worn various of their garments over the years, they’re not far wrong.

Their urban pants are built to stretch and breathe – while never compromising on style.

So while DUER isn’t focussed only on cyclists, they have nevertheless managed to create some of the best urban cycling pants in the world for men and women.

Ornot is a quirky San Francisco-based cycling brand that has an excellent non-cycling-cycling-clothes range suitably called “Wear It On Your Bike Ornot“.

Ornot specialize in sporty cycling wear, but their urban range is excellent. It consists of hoodies, jumpers, t-shirts, trousers and some excellent – and I mean excellent – urban bike shorts.

They’re still early days in their urban wear journey, but I’ve got my fingers crossed that they continue to expand upon their already excellent range.

The Commute range isn’t the biggest, but there is some really stunning pieces to be found with the Velocio Recon Snap Jacket being one of the favourite jackets I own – it’s stunningly stylish, while also being incredible lightweight yet warm due it’s fleece lining.

Although it’s not the biggest collection, Velocio have covered all bases, with a range of jackets, tops, t-shirts, trousers, shorts and accessories available for both men and women.

Scandinavia knows a thing or two about style and cycling, and Sigr is the embodiment of this.

Based in Sweden, Sigr’s Commuter range is a thing of elegant practicality. Their range of urban cycling clothing remains small, but everything in it oozes quality.

That said, you’ll find everything you’ll need for a summer or winter commute: trousers, chinos, shorts, a polo and a couple of great cycling jackets – all of which comes in both men’s and women’s versions.

While their urban range in minimalistic in design, Sigr have managed to squeeze in as much cycling functionality as they could into their products, meaning as well as breathability and stretch, you’ll also find reflective detailing on the rear of their trousers and shorts.

9. Osloh Bicycle Jeans

While Resolute Bay are the masters of cycling jeans in Europe, in North America, that title belongs to Osloh.

Indeed, Osloh specialise in only creating cycling jeans. I’ve tried and tested them through the years and they are extremely hard-wearing and they are probably the toughest jeans you’ll ever own.

Osloh produce bike jeans for both men and women and there are two things I can guarantee you’ll find: lots of reinforcement on seams and hard-wearing areas and an abundance of pockets (7 pockets, on the Traffic Jean, for example).

Although they only make jeans, Osloh also sell some other handy cycling accessories, including the innovative Tex-Lock plus some other cool lights, mirrors and bike bells.

10. Vulpine

A few years ago, Vulpine were the darlings of urban cycling fashion. And it wasn’t hard to see why. They had mastered the art/science blend of form and function, creating a stunning collection of city cycling gear and accessories.

But it all came tumbling down in 2017 when the company surprisingly went into administration despite raising over £1 million in online crowdfunding barely two years earlier.

The company was subsequently bought by another cycling brand, but they too went bust not long later.
