They may not have the same sporty feel as a road bike, but they can handle long rides on smooth roads with ease. However, when faced with a £500 budget for a new ride, we would strongly lean towards investing in a high-quality hybrid bike. While a hybrid may not offer the same adrenaline-charged experience as a gravel bike, its versatility nearly rivals that of a gravel bike. Furthermore, with a broader array of choices in this price range, we contend that you are more likely to discover a superior bicycle that aligns with your budget.

The last bike on our list is the Marin Nicasio+. It differs from all the others on our list as it is made from steel, rather than aluminium. Steel is heavier than alloy, but it does deliver a unique and plus ride – plus it’s super hardwearing.

The 1x gearing is simple to operate and the Nicasio+ also has the widest tyres of any bike on our list. At 47mm wide they deliver a carpet-like ride on tarmac.

Although the external gear and brake cabling are less neat, it does make changing a cable super easy, even for a home mechanic with basic tools.

Budget Gravel Bike Brands in UK

Historically this £1000 pricepoint was uber competitive due to the popular government backed cycle to work scheme. Most employers only allowed employees to buy a bike up to the value of £1000. These days most employers have removed this limit and along with inflationary pressure in the UK, it’s hard to find many gravel bikes below £1000.

A quick peruse of our favourite online retailers show there aren’t a huge number of gravel bikes sold below £1000. Whilst there’s the odd one or two at retailers like Sigma Sports, these are often reduced or in the sale.

Although it didn’t make it onto our list, the Triban gravel bike, is worth a look – it’s essentially the same as the GRVL 120 we included on our list.

At the time of writing, Marin are perhaps the biggest brand with a range of gravel bikes under £1000. Kona is another brand which is also worth a look. Their Rove AL 650 is one of, if not the only gravel below £1000 which is sold with the more off-road friendly 650b wheel size.

If you can stretch your budget a tad, then have a look at Sonder, the brand of outdoor kit experts Alpkit.

We’ve used our experience in the cycle industry to scour the internet in order to find a range of gravel bikes that are going to deliver the goods without breaking your bank account.

How Much Do Gravel Bikes Cost?

Most gravel bikes these days cost over $1000. If your gravel bike budget is below four figures you’ll certainly have less choice.

Given that gravel bikes are just another type of bike, you’d imagine that they’d be available at all kinds of price points. But in our experience, this isn’t the case.

We browsed a popular online US-based retailer for gravel bikes and of the 100+ models they had for sale, not one was priced below $1000. On the very same website, their selection of hybrid bikes started from just $400.

What do we put this down to? Well, perhaps it can be argued that gravel bikes’ specific design and use are primarily aimed at enthusiastic, regular bike riders rather than those who cycle less often.

It is unfortunate, however, because the design of gravel bikes is such that they are a great first bike for someone getting into riding for the first time. They aren’t as sporty as a road bike, but would happily cope with long rides on tarmac with friends. Nor are they as finickity as a mountain bike with suspension and yet they still cope with some light off-roading.

With a little research you can find yourself one of the best budget gravel bikes to accompany you on your bike rides or commutes.

Can You Get a Gravel Bike under $1000?

Whilst there aren’t a huge number of options available, you can certainly buy a gravel bike for under $1000. At this price, they certainly won’t be one of the best or lightest gravel bikes available, but they should perform well enough for most.

Most gravel bikes between $750 and $1000 tend to be made from aluminium, run mechanical (not hydraulic) disc brakes and have drop handlebars.

To nip under the four-figure price, manufacturers tend to skimp on the standard of key components like gears, brakes and tires.

Some will also look to steer clear of more expensive, but well-known componentry brands like Shimano and SRAM and fit their bikes with less popular brands like Microshift and Tektro.

Can You Get a Gravel Bike under $500?

There aren’t many gravel bikes available under $500, but it is possible to buy one at this price.

However, if we had $500 to spend on a gravel bike, we’d much rather spend it on a good quality hybrid bike.

Although a hybrid bike won’t deliver the pedal-to-metal riding of a gravel bike, its versatility almost matches a gravel bike, and with much more choice at this price, we’d argue that you are more likely to find a better bike for your budget.

Like all bike purchases, it’s a good idea to consider the pros and cons before you jump in with both feet.

What’s the Cheapest Gravel Bike (USA)?

The cheapest gravel bike in the USA is the Amok Gravel Adventure Bike – on sale at the time of writing below $500. The cycling purists amongst you might argue that this is just a rebranded hybrid bike and, in this case, we’d tend to agree with you.

The bike has flat handlebars (although some gravel bikes have flat handlebars!) and a gear ratio more akin to a hybrid bike. That being said, the Amok should be a good partner for riding on road, gravel and singletrack.

Ultimately the Journeyer is all about attainable gravel and road adventures and it does that with aplomb.

The only steel gravel bike on our list is the State. All-Road 4130. Again, like the Salsa Journeyer we listed above it can be purchased in a variety of guises.

The steel frame and fork, whilst heavy, makes for a reliable and solid base ( as do the thru-axles for the wheels), upon which State has added what has to be said a somewhat hotchpotch of different components. Whilst they won’t deliver the highest performance they’re probably a fair reflection of the overall price of the bike.

Although its bang on the $1000 mark, the bike has a heavier aluminium fork rather than a carbon one, but its saving grace is that it includes mounts for fenders a front rack or whatever else you can think to mount to it.

Poseidon is one of few bike manufacturers that offer a range of well-priced gravel bikes. For this list, we chose the Dropbar Redwood, primarily for its capability away from tarmac.

The Redwood is sold with Kenda Kadre tires. These are essentially do-it-all mountain bike tires. They’ll be great on gravel, fire roads and singletrack but they’ll feel draggy on tarmac and pavement.

Again, the gearing (1×10) is setup for riding fairly steep off-road climbs, but the largest gear (38×11) should help when speeds are higher.

In our experience, there are three key bike brands that offer budget gravel bikes. Marin and Salsa are the main two, with State Bicycle Co. a third. Each of these brands doesn’t just have one bike below $1000, they have a number, so if you’re in the market for a gravel bike on a budget, then give these three a look.

As we’ve illustrated in this article there aren’t a huge number of brands that offer gravel bikes below $1000. Indeed, some of the biggest bicycle manufacturers in the world – the likes of Trek and Specialized for example – don’t currently offer a gravel bike below $1000.

People who are looking to buy a bicycle for the first time in a long while are often plagued with questions and insecurity:

And it’s completely understandable. There are just so, so many different types and models of bicycles out there. Likewise, the advice around this is often needlessly complicated.

For most people looking for a bike for riding around a town, this is all you really need to know:

2. Seven gears are plenty for the vast majority of commuters
3. Electric bikes are amazing, although they’re much more expensive than a normal bike (although still miles cheaper than any motorised vehicle)

Until recently, I’ve been riding hybrid Decathlon bikes almost exclusively.

Why? Because they’re cheap and they get me from A to B. I’m not trying to beat a personal best, nor am I scaling a mountain.

I love electric bikes. It’s like cycling with an endless tailwind. What’s more, people who purchase an e-bike see their average bicycle use rise to 9.2km per day (from 2.1km per day for traditional bikes). This discounts any “lazy” arguments aimed at e-bike owners, as people ride more than 4x more on average.

That said, electric bikes are expensive compared to normal bikes (although still miles cheaper than owning and running any motorised vehicle).

However, there are a few relatively cheap e-bikes around that are perfect for commuting. In particular, I’d recommend the Engwe P26, which offers everything you need in an commuter e-bike.

Two years ago I had my first ever bike stolen. But, as I explained at the time, it was my fault. In short, during a hasty locking of my bike, I simply attached my lock around the lamppost, but not my bike frame – which, as it turns out, is pretty important if you don’t want someone to walk off with your bike.

The next day, I decided I needed to find the best cheap bike I could find. So, I went to Decathlon: the home of cheap bikes.

I’d love to buy a fancy shiny bike with all the bells and whistles, but the truth is: I don’t trust myself to take care of it. My bike maintenance skills are close to zero and even if the bike evades the slow death caused my little upkeep, there’s also the matter of me not being able to lock up a bicycle.

After some potential deliberations about possibly getting a gravel bike, I opted for my typical bicycle of choice: a hybrid bike.

Living in Spain, I like a bike that can handle dodgy roads, so front suspension is very welcome.

So, after some research, I settled on the cheap and cheerful BTWIN Riverside 500 Bike from Decathlon, which is available for around the £/€/$300 mark.

I don’t know why, but despite owning this bike for two years, I’d never actually gotten round to writing a review on it. So, here is my two-year review of the Riverside 500…

BTWIN Riverside 500 Review

I’ve always been partial to owning a cheap bike. Sometimes through necessity (i.e. being a broke student), but I also like not having to worry about my bike too much. If something happens to it, I’ll get a new one with not too much stress.

Over the past year, I’ve experienced the flipside of this by owning a somewhat expensive electric fat bike. That bike I have to be much more considerate about when and where I leave it, as it is an eye-catching bike that thieves will definitely be keen on stealing if given half a chance.

So why did I choose the Riverside 500?

Well, first off, I thought it looked cool. Hybrid bikes can sometimes look a bit clumsy, but with a squared frame shape with a slight drop in the top bar plus some really nice colour options (I went for the blue/orange combo), it looked nice.

In the past I’ve got some bikes with all the bells and whistles for commuters (i.e. dynamo lights, pannier racks and the like), but this time I wanted something a little bit simpler and lighter.

Decathlon’s Best Hybrid Bike?

For a hybrid bike that comes in well under £/$500, the Decathlon’s Riverside 500 is impressively light, weighing in at 14.1kg – which is definitely the perk of not adding too many features to the bike, plus an aluminium frame.

Indeed, the Riverside features solid reactive disc brakes, front suspension and is a 9-speed bike with a thumb shifter which makes switching through gears very easy.

I also find this bike very comfortable to ride. This is aided by the bike’s suspension, but also by Decathlon’s ergonomic saddle.

Admittedly, I don’t ride this bike for long rides. That’s mostly because it’s exceedingly rare for me to ride more than 10km in general. 90% of my rides are a 3.5km (hilly) commute to my office in town. As well as the hills, there are several hefty speed bumps on my route, so the front suspension certainly helps in this regard.

A Budget Hybrid Bike for Commuting

Indeed, after two years of riding this bike nearly every day, I’m still happy with the purchase. I’ve gotten a bit better at bike maintenance over that time too, so it’s stay in condition. I’m still using the same disk brakes, even the same tyres as when I bought it. The only thing that’s aged in the colour of the bike frame somewhat, which has faded quite a bit after being left in the Spanish sun for many hours. It’s also worth noting that the frame does scratch quite easily, as you can see in the picture below.

But in terms of a cheap commuter bike, it’s great. I’ve even tried it out as a “mountain bike” with friends and managed to, for the most part, keep up with them on the tracks, even despite having significantly narrower tyres than them.

Decathlon’s Riverside 500 Bike Review Summary

All-in-all, this a great value budget hybrid bike. If you’ve got a relatively short commute (under 10km or so) with some hills and bumps, I can attest to the fact that it will be a dependable companion. It’s a sturdy hybrid bike available at a fantastic price.

Two years after buying it, I still stand behind the fact that the Riverside 500 is best budget hybrid bikes for commuting, with the bike available for around $550/£350.

That said, folding e-bikes are also helpful for RV owners and adventurers – anyone who likes to get outdoors but is short for space for that matter.

Arguably, Brompton – yes, those guys again – make the best folding electric bike around. The design cleverly uses the front carrier block to mount the battery and other electrical gubbins – a space that is usually reserved for a bag on standard, non-electric Brompton.

If this all sounds too good to be true, well, it is to some extent. An electric Brompton folding bike can easily set you back $3800 or £3000.

Other brands tend to focus their folding electric bikes on specific features like making them as light as possible, as powerful as possible, or even as small as possible (when folded).

That said it’s still possible to come by a cheap folding electric bike – just don’t expect too much from it. It certainly won’t be one of the lightest folding electric bikes on the market nor one with the longest range between charges.

Folding e-bikes with fat tires are particularly in vogue at the moment, but given their sheer size and bulk, there don’t tend to be many priced below our $1000 ceiling.
